Dementia is a condition that can come with aging and be difficult to manage. It affects senior’s memory and cognitive function. Alzheimer’s, a form of dementia, progresses the fastest and usually occurs earlier than other types of dementia.
Alzheimer’s affects almost 5 million seniors and with the baby boom generation getting older the number is growing. Thankfully, there are lifestyle choices that can be made to reduce the risk of dementia!
People who stay physically active are less likely to have a decline in their mental function. Staying active creates a link between mind and body, preventing memory loss. Also, it has been proven to lower the risk of developing Alzheimer’s. Those with obesity have an increased risk of developing cognitive disorders, so it’s important to stay fit and keep the weight off. An active lifestyle keeps your mind and body healthy!
At Entrust Desoto we offer a multitude of fitness classes to keep you moving, such as kickball and group walks. Check out our monthly activity calendar to see what’s offered this month!
Challenging your brain regularly with learning new things will keep it sharp and healthy. Staying engaged with the world around you will help exercise your brain, just like lifting weights or swimming exercises your body.
Exercising your mind is as easy as socializing with friends, reading a book, or learning a new task. Volunteering part-time can be a good way to get involved in the community and get your brain thinking. It’s also never too late to go back to school and learn a new language or subject!
Each month at Entrust Desoto we have different events to keep seniors using their minds in a healthy way, such as spelling bees or trivia games.
Keep A Healthy Heart
There is a link between cardiovascular disease and developing Alzheimer’s. It’s important for seniors to protect themselves against heart attacks, strokes, and high blood pressure. Eating a diet high in fiber and low in animal fats can help lower the risks of cardiovascular disease. Also, exercising and maintaining a healthy body weight will help in reducing the risk!
Keep Away from Smoking
If you’re a smoker it’s time to kick the habit! Smoking leads to numerous types of cancers and is terrible for heart health. Also, it increases the risk of developing Alzheimer’s. Researchers in Finland say they’ve found strong reason to believe that smoking more than two packs of cigarettes daily from age 50 to 60 increases risk of dementia later in life.
