3 Things You Need to Know About Seniors During Coronavirus

Coronavirus affects all different ages and types of people around the world. Although, the primary group that’s affected is seniors – ages 65 or older. At an older age the immune system is less effective at fighting infections. Also, the chances of having other conditions increases the likelihood of exposure.

During these difficult times self-isolation and social distancing is the best choice for seniors. Even though this is the best option, it can be extremely hard on seniors being in the house for such a long period. Younger people can be the helping hand in these times of need.

Technology can be a savior for seniors

Seniors are more connected than ever – 85% of seniors 65 and older owned a cell phone with 46% of those owning a smartphone. The willingness of seniors to interact with technology can help lower rates of isolation and depression, which can have devastating consequences for senior health.

Top apps for virtual connections

  • Skype

One of the most popular apps for video chatting is Skype. It’s a free app that can be downloaded to a mobile device or a laptop or desktop. The app features HD video, live subtitles, and call recording so that you can relive those special moments caught on video.

  • Facetime

FaceTime is specifically for iPhone users and can only be used to call other iPhone users. FaceTime is a free app for video calls, similar to Skype.

  • Facebook Messenger

Facebook Messenger is available to both Facebook users and non-users. On Facebook Messenger, you can chat, send a video, or make an audio or video call.

Don’t fall for misinformation

There is a lot of inaccurate information going around about COVID-19 and the ones who believe this information are less likely to follow public health recommendations to protect themselves and others.

Even people who believe misinformation about COVID-19 trust information about COVID-19 from their doctors. So, if your elderly loved one isn’t taking the coronavirus seriously, have their doctor step in. Many doctors and other healthcare professionals are taking time to talk with people who are at greater risk of COVID-19 complications to address their concerns — and it’s just one more thing for us all to be grateful to them for during this.

Get your senior loved one to open up

Seniors may have lost friends or loved ones due to COVID-19, so it’s important to be there for them. Encouraging them to express their feelings and open up about their situation can be a good support system for them.  Mind and body go hand in hand – If depression happens they may stop eating or drinking and then their physical health goes in a downward spiral.

Seniors need to speak to someone who is willing to listen and affirm their feelings. Remember that you needn’t take on the position of being their emotional support system all by yourself. Enlist other family and friends to check in, too. Seniors enjoy hearing from someone they haven’t heard from in a while –  organizing virtual group hangouts is also important right now.
